China California Heart Watch Externship

  • Sep 11, 2017

Hello Spartans!

I'm here to share an opprotunity to get world experience, clinical experience, and valuble volunteering hours. There is an externship available through the non-profit organization China California Heart Watch. This organization was founded by Robert Detrano, M.D., Ph.D after he traveled to rural China. The Yunnan province is impovershed and lacks proper medical care. This is especially detrimental because the province's people are experiencing an epidemic of heart disease. Dr. Detrano saw this and became determined to bring health care to these people. And thus, the China California Heart Watch was born.

This program would span from December 15th, 2017- December 28th, 2017. The program comes in three parts:

  1. Three day orientation in Dali in the Yunnan province to recieve background on heart anatomy, physiology, and congenital heart defects.
  2. Observing cardiac surgery, appointments, and interventional measures in the Fu Wai Cardiovascular Hospital in Kunming.
  3. Interview and examine patients under the supervision of instructors in rural pediatric cardiology clinics, while also recieving lectures on public health and cardiology.

As far as cost goes, there is a fee of $3000. This covers domestic transport through China, room and board costs, and also helps pay for some of the treatment Chinese citizens recieve from this organization. You are also responsible for aquiring a visa beforehand and paying seperately for your plane ticket.

This is an amazing opprotunity for anyone interested in medicine of some kind or public health. If you want more information, visit www.chinacal.org. To apply, go to that website and hover over "get involved" and click "Externships". Scroll to the bottom, and there will be a link to the application.
