I am preprofessional and I am: Overwhelmed (because I have to do it all)

  • Dec 1, 2016

Trust me. I know the feeling. Between working 2 jobs, being on 2 executive boards, being in a sorority, and finding time for things like breathing, I am in a constant state of stress. As soon as I finish one thing, another thing needs tending to and it becomes a vicious cycle. Doing it all and then some is a common story among us preprofessional students.  At some point you’ll probably end up finding yourself overwhelmed like me. Choosing this career path certainly isn’t easy. However, it shouldn’t ruin you. Sometimes you need to know when to call it quits. If you’re like me, you love to bite off more than you can chew. You volunteer for anything (because you’re a good person or because of professional school or both), you help others when no else does, and you essentially try to be a superhuman.

If there is one thing I’ve learned from this fast paced lifestyle, it’s not to do it. Doing it all and then some is great, and while schools love to see a well-rounded applicant, they also want someone who is healthy (mentally and emotionally). Being well rounded isn’t just being the president of 4 clubs, but being a good friend, student, and employee. You can have a million things on your application but it’s all about what you get from those things that matters to schools. I know a dental student who only worked 1 job (and didn’t do much else) during her undergrad years and got in because she wrote an amazing essay on what her job taught her. It’s not about the amount of experience you have, but what it means to you. You need to make time for yourself! You may be a preprofessional student but you have to remember to be a HUMAN also. You have needs (like seeing friends, reading, or mindlessly watching Netflix). You’ll burn out if you overdo it (trust me I’ve been there and it will only hurt your application).

Learn it from me. Don’t pile on everything because you think that’s what schools want. They want to see you well-rounded but they also want to see you happy. I can’t stress this enough.

With love from your super busy PPA,

Bailey
