Dean Search. Mr. Curry summarized the state of the search for the Dean of the College of Natural Science. He reported that the search committee would be doing Skype interviews next week (week starting November 6, 2017). The goal is to have campus visits for the candidates occur after the first of the year with a new dean in place by July 1, 2018. With this schedule, the interim dean would most likely be in this positon for a semester.
Interim Dean Search. Mr. Curry reported on duties of the interim dean in the spring. Basic duties would be the day-to-day routine decisions that would have to be made. No significant new initiatives would be expected to occur. The interim dean will be responsible for the conduction of procedures associated with the promotion and tenure process, with such duties possibly playing a role in choosing candidates for the position. He mentioned additional considerations for choosing candidates might include, evidence of administrative competence, and have trust/respect throughout the college. Mr. Curry then requested potential names of candidates and these were offered.
NatSci FAC and the Interim Dean Search. After Mr. Curry’s updates and upon his leaving, the NatSci FAC continued discussions on possible candidates, as this was the first time that the committee was able to evaluate the suggested candidates. It was decided that the primary (albeit not the only) pool for candidates would be past chairs and that current chairs would not be considered. In addition, the characteristics for candidates outlined by Mr. Curry were considered. The duties regarding RPT were particularly discussed. The committee then developed a list of potential candidates. It was the intent that this list be submitted to Mr. Curry as soon as possible. Dave Long (FAC secretary) was to draft a letter to Mr. Curry, to be ready for FAC review at the November 9, 2017 meeting.
