Approval of the March Meeting Minutes. The minutes from the March 5, 2015 meeting were approved as written.
English Language for International Students; Guest: Patricia (Pat) Walters from the English Language Center
Ms. Walters gave an overview of the different places students are based on the admittance requirements in place when they came to MSU. Many international students were admitted provisionally for English a couple years ago. Last year only 20% of international students were provisionally admitted. Even though a great majority was granted regular admission, it doesn’t mean they can jump into the English language pool and be competitive. The ELC assists students who were given regular admission in many ways, including and ESL Lab where students can get help navigating assignments--understanding the direction. This is help with academic classes (not ELC courses). Faculty can refer students from class to their program. Ms. Walters also noted that all international students have a 1-week required orientation. An online component will be offered before they get to campus. FAC is supportive of ESL 291 and will consider writing a letter of support.
RCPD Letter from the Provost and the Director of the Office for Inclusion & Intercultural Initiatives
The letter from the provost in response to the letter sent by the NatSci FAC identifying RCPD issues was sent to all faculty. It does not address all the items the NatSci FAC asked them to. Discussion took place about next steps. It was decided that the conversation be tabled until the dean is present.
Graduate Student Academic Grievance Hearing Procedures
The document was sent to committee members before the meeting. No changes were identified. Approval was unanimous.
Award Process Overview
Members were reminded that award nominations are due on April 22. The packets will be put on a D2L site and members notified they can begin to review them. FAC members will be divided into review groups. The groups will be sorted out once the nominations are in and the number is determined. Award recipients will be determined at the May meeting.
Results were sent to FAC members before the meeting. Members were informed that all individuals were sent letters notifying them whether or not they were elected.
