Last April, ten teams faced off in MSU’s IM Sports West turf arena for the Physiology Society student club’s inaugural dodgeball tournament to raise money for the Association for Children’s Mental Health (ACMH).
Teams from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Charles Drew Science Scholars, physiology and Campus Ministry raised more than $440 for the Lansing based non-profit and had a lot of fun doing it.
“We bounced ideas back and forth to do something for charity that could be an annual event we could really lay the groundwork for,” explained John Shinners, a College of Human Medicine student and the club’s events coordinator. “We decided on a dodgeball tournament.”
Eric Ballard, a student in MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine who also helped organize the event, wanted to get students involved in giving back to their community.
“The past couple of years it’s been difficult to get everyone to come together and do something for a great cause,” Ballard said. “The dodgeball tournament gave us a chance to bond and to understand volunteerism and community involvement.”
“It created unity in the group because we had a common goal and could work toward that,” Shinners said.
“Service is a huge thing—giving back,” he added. “We, as a club, came up with the marketing, the format and the charity, so it was a cause we could all get behind and support. He hopes the tradition will continue.
NOTE: The second annual dodgeball tournament is scheduled for April 14 from noon – 2:00 p.m. at MSU’s IM Circle. The event will again raise money for the Association for Children’s Mental Health. For more information, contact James Hlawnceu at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
