Calculating Your Science & Math GPA

It's important to know how to calculate your science and math GPA, which will be reported by centralized application services to the professional health schools to which you apply. The table below lists the different professional health schools and the courses their centralized application services consider when calculating the science and math GPA.

Health Professions/ Application Services Science/Math GPA includes
Allopathic-MD (AMCAS) Biology* (not including HNF, BLD, PHM, or KIN), CEM (includes BMB & ISP), PHY (includes AST) & MTH (includes STT)
Osteopathic-DO (AACOMAS) Biology*, CEM (includes BMB), PHY, & Other Science (AST, EGR, EPI, GLG, KIN, BLD, HNF, ISP & PHM)
Dental-DDS & DMD (AADSAS) Biology* (including PHM & some PSY & EGR courses), CEM (includes BMB), PHY, & Other Science (ANR, ANS, AST, BLD, EPI, GLG, ISP, KIN, HNF, MTH, EGR, NUR, PLB, & any statistics course)
Podiatry-DPM (AACPMAS) Biology* (including ANS), CEM (includes BMB & PHM), PHY, & Other Science (AST, EGR, EPI, GLG, ISP, KIN, BLD, HNF, & some ANP courses)
Pharmacy (PharmCas) Biology*, CEM (includes BMB), PHY, & Other Science (AGR, ANS, BLD, EPI, EGR, GLG, HNF, KIN, BLD, NUR, PHM)
Physician Assistant (CASPA) Biology*, (including ANS & PLB), CEM (includes BMB), Physics & Other Science (ANR, AST, AT, EGR, EPI, GLG, ISP, KIN, HNF, NUR, BLD, & PHM)
Physical Therapy (PTCAS) Biology*(includes ANS and ISP), CEM (includes BMB), PHY, MTH (includes STT)
Optometry (OptomCas) Biology*, CEM (Includes BMB), & PHY

*“Biology” includes courses labeled with “BS”, “ANTR”, “PSL”, “ZOL”, “MMG”, “NEU” and “ISB” codes from MSU.

ALL application services (except AACOMAS & OptomCas) average grades from ALL courses, including repeats, when calculating GPA’s. AACOMAS & OptomCas only uses the last grade earned for repeat courses when calculating GPA’s.

To calculate your science & math GPA, use the following steps:

  1. List each course you took or plan on taking and how many credits it is worth.
  2. For each course, list the earned or expected grade.
  3. Multiply the number of credits by the grade to get the “Grade Points” for each course.
  4. Add the Grade Points for each course together to get Total Grade Points.
  5. Divide the Total Grade Points by the total number of Credit Hours attempted. Credit hours = the total number of credits you earned and attempted. (Note that you do not earn credits for courses with a grade of 0.0 at MSU)

Example - This is an example of how AMCAS will calculate your GPA. You are interested in knowing your science & Math GPA and these are the grades you have thus far in your classes. (Note that depending on which professional school you will apply to will depend on which courses you consider to be science & Math. Please refer to the table above for specific information).

Course Credits Grade Grade Points
CEM 141 4 4.0 16
CEM 161 1 4.0 4
CEM 142 3 3.5 10.5
BS 110 4 4.0 16
PHY 231 3 3.5 10.5
Totals 15 Credit Hours   57 grade points

57 Grade Points ÷ 15 Credits = 3.8 GPA in the sciences
