How to Find Volunteer Opportunities

  • Nov 29, 2016

So you are a pre-professional student, and you're not sure how to get started on volunteering and community service. Because engaging in the community is so important, I'm going to give you some tips on how to find volunteer opportunities near you.

Both hospital volunteering and community service are important, so keep that in mind when you are trying to stand out as you apply to professional schools.

Community Service

A really important and useful place to use to find regular volunteer opportunities is Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE).

Some helpful sites that has on its page are Capital Way United Way Volunteer Center and GiveGab. These are really cool websites that allow for you to search for nearby volunteer opportunities that interest you. They tell you how you can sign up, and since there are so many projects out there, you will find something that works with your schedule.

However, you are not limited to what is offered on these websites. For example, you can volunteer with MSU Food Bank, the Red Cross, or through a club or organization that you are a part of on campus. (Many fraternities, sororities, and clubs on campus are heavily involved in service.)

Hospital Volunteering

Again, CSLCE is going to be really important for finding hospital volunteering opportunities around campus. McLaren and Sparrow both take MSU students as college volunteers.

For spring semester, registration for hospital volunteering will open beginning of January. This is a very competitive position to acquire, so if you are interested in volunteering at Sparrow or McLaren you should sign up as soon as registration opens. (Registration occurs through the CSLCE website.)

Sparrow and McLaren are not your only options for hospital volunteering. If you are going home for the summer, find hospitals near you and ask how you can volunteer there. Contact hospices and clinics that you would want to engage in, and see how you can get involved.

You won't find opportunities if you don't search for them.

So go forth Spartans, and volunteer your hearts out.
