How to Survive a Drought

As global weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, securing the world's food supply is one of the 21st century's defining challenges. MSU plant biologist Thelma Madzima is on the frontlines of this fight. Her research investigates how crops respond to environmental stress—specifically extreme drought—at the molecular level.

By exploring how gene expression changes without altering the underlying DNA sequence, Dr. Madzima’s lab seeks to understand how plants "remember" stress and adapt. This work holds immense promise for breeding climate-resilient crops capable of thriving in warming, water-scarce environments.

An Evolutionary Treasure

How can an ancient fish help us understand human health and development? Enter the spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus), a "living fossil" that has remained largely unchanged for millions of years.

Researcher Ingo Braasch and his team are leveraging the spotted gar’s unique genome to bridge the evolutionary gap between teleost (modern ray-finned) fish and land vertebrates, including humans. Because popular biomedical model organisms like zebrafish underwent an extra genome duplication event during evolution, their genetic pathways can be tricky to map directly to humans. The gar lacks this extra duplication, serving as a clean Rosetta Stone that clarifies how human genes evolved and function in health and disease.

The Search for Next-Gen Weight Loss Drugs

While metabolic health and weight management are major public health topics, current therapeutic options do not work identically for everyone and often come with side effects. Physiology professor Gina Leinninger is diving deep into the brain circuitry that governs hunger, metabolism, and satiety.

Dr. Leinninger’s lab identified specific brain peptides that regulate appetite and body weight without triggering adverse side effects.
