NatSci students, alum nominated for prestigious UK scholarships
Few people can hear a reference to the Rhodes or Churchill Scholarships without recognizing their prestige. Likewise, acceptance to such institutions of higher learning as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK are immediately noted as a distinct honor to the recipient.
Five Michigan State University College of Natural Science students and one recent alum are among the 10 MSU students and four alumni nominated this year for nationally competitive graduate school scholarships in the UK and Ireland that could make these potential honors a reality.
The Churchill, Marshall, Mitchell and Rhodes scholarships each provide one or two years of support for students attending graduate school in the United Kingdom or Ireland. All of the scholarships provide living expenses, and travel to and from the UK. Additional support for each of these scholarships varies slightly; specifics may be found on their respective web pages.
The MSU NatSci nominees for the Churchill Scholarship are:
- Isabella (Izzy) Ginnett, an Honors College senior majoring in physics and advanced mathematics and
- Charles Hultquist, an Honors College senior majoring in physics and advanced mathematics.
Ginnett and Hultquist have also been nominated for the Marshall Scholarship, along with:
- Andrew McDonald, an Honors College senior majoring in advanced mathematics and statistics in the College of Natural Science and computer science in the College of Engineering;
- Renold Mueller, an Honors College senior majoring in mathematics in the College of Natural Science and political science in the College of Social Science; and
- Anna Savan, a 2020 graduate and Honors College member with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.
McDonald and Mueller are also nominees for the Mitchell Scholarship, along with:
- Christina Liu, an Honors College senior majoring in environmental biology–zoology.
Nominees for the U.S. Rhodes Scholarship include Ginnett, Hultquist, McDonald, Mueller and Powers.
“The College of Natural Science congratulates our current students and a recent alum who have been nominated for these prestigious UK graduate fellowships,” said Lynmarie Posey, NatSci associate dean for undergraduate studies. “As students, each of these nominees has distinguished themselves in the classroom and beyond. NatSci is honored to have them as members of our community and takes pride in their accomplishments. We anticipate that they will be among the next generation of leaders in their respective fields, and we can’t wait to see the ways in which they will change the world.”
In total, MSU has produced 16 Churchill Scholars, 20 Marshall Scholars, five Mitchell Scholars and 20 Rhodes Scholars. MSU will hear about the results of these competitions in the coming months.
The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
