Meet the Student Success Advising Team.

Danielle Flores Lopez, Ph.D.

Dr. Danielle Flores Lopez (she/her) is the Director of Academic Advising and Student Success Initiatives in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University. In this role, she leads strategic efforts to enhance student retention, academic achievement, and holistic success. With a career rooted in advising, mentoring, and certified academic life coach through Coach Training EDU, Dr. Flores Lopez is known for her student-centered approach and commitment to empowering individuals to reach their full potential. She deeply believes that supporting students’ health and wellbeing is essential to fostering true student success.
 
Dr. Flores Lopez has been a tireless advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education. She co-founded Mujer a Mujer, a student empowerment group dedicated to fostering academic and professional growth by connecting members with inspiring role models. The group also focuses on building leadership skills, resilience, and meaningful connections within the campus network. Her work reflects a deep belief in the power of education to create pathways for personal growth and social change.
 
A first-generation college student, Dr. Flores Lopez earned her Ph.D. in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) from the College of Education at Michigan State University. Outside of her professional work, Danielle enjoys spending time with her family, trying new food, traveling, and being in nature.
 

Jennifer Freitas, M.S.

jfJenny (she/her/hers) is the Student Success Advisor in NatSci. After graduating from Michigan State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences (interdepartmental w/ the College of Education), she began teaching high school science. She taught Biology, Chemistry, and AP Biology over the past five years. She received a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University in 2022. She joined the MSU NatSci Student Success team in 2023 to grow in her passion for cultivating student success through university advising. Jenny is skilled at empowering students to grow and achieve their academic goals by helping them use research-based success strategies. She finds great purpose in developing solutions for student academic needs and building genuine relationships that foster student belonging on campus. She welcomes all NatSci students to schedule a visit with her for advising on any area of academic improvement, including effective study strategies, test-taking/anxiety help, time management and work/life balance, goal-setting, etc. She enjoys visits to the lake with her family, cheering on MSU athletics, and bubble tea!

 

Sebastian Mercier, Ph.D. 

Sebastian (he/him/his) completed his Ph.D. in History at Michigan State University. Prior to his current NatSci role, Sebastian served as an Academic Advisor in the Political Science Department at MSU. He promotes holistic advising and wants every student to achieve their academic goals. He empowers NatSci students to find people and places to belong on campus, build healthy relationships, become involved, and expand their cultural horizons. Sebastian also mentors students to shift from a course focused mind-set to an outward mind-set, focusing on potential career paths and life-long intellectual interests. Sebastian coaches students to acquire and develop research-based academic success strategies. These include studying, time management, note-taking, stress management, financial literacy, and an emphasis on physical and mental health. He encourages students to schedule advising appointments to go over any academic question or concern. Sebastian's enjoys cooking and baking, time with his cat, and reading comic books during his free time.
