Norman Birge, Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been appointed Interim Associate Dean of Budget, Planning, Research, and Administration in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University. His appointment begins on September 1, 2024.

“I am honored to step into this role and to contribute to the ongoing success of our college,” said Birge. “Balancing the budget, supporting innovative research, and managing our talented personnel are responsibilities I take very seriously. I am committed to ensuring that our resources are used effectively to advance our academic mission and to support the groundbreaking work being done here. Together, we will continue to foster an environment where excellence in research and education thrives.”

Birge came to Michigan State University in 1998 as faculty in the Department of Physics. His research at MSU has spanned several topics in quantum transport and “mesoscopic physics” -- the study of small (typically sub-micron) metallic samples. For the past 15 years Birge’s group has focused on the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in hybrid structures, which surprisingly led to a long and fruitful collaboration with industry. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), and private industry. Birge’s previous administrative role was as Director of MSU’s Center for Fundamental Materials Research from 1999 – 2001.

Birge received his BA from Harvard in 1979 and his PhD in 1986 from the University of Chicago.
