Stopping Anti-Asian Bias and Violence

Asian American History and Resilience

  • Many resources below come from:  After Atlanta: Teaching About Asian American Identity and History, Kleinrock, E. (2021, March 17). Learning for Justice.
  • Asian Americans: PBS documentary series streaming free (2020, May).
  • To Teach and Transform, Liz Kleinrock, Anti-Bias & Anti-Racist Educator. Won, J. (Host). (2021, February 27). (N. 98). [Audio podcast episode]. In Dear Asian Americans.
  • Viral Histories: Stories of Racism, Resilience, and Resistance in Asian American Communities, May 18-21, 2020: Community leaders will share their first-hand experience with historians from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, who will connect these experiences to the past. Each day during the event, an interview video will be released at 9:00 am EDT, with a  live Q&A with some of the featured speakers every day at 3:00 pm EDT.
  • Asian American Racial Justice Toolkit: Teaching modules “designed to begin with people’s lived experiences, and to build structural awareness of why those experiences are happening, and how they are tied to the oppression of others. By highlighting the role of people’s resistance both past and present, the toolkit also seeks to build hope and a commitment to political struggle.”
  • We are Not a Stereotype: Breaking Down Asian Pacific American Bias, video series from the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center that “explores and challenges the complexity surrounding the term Asian Pacific American, breaking it down into topics that span multiple timelines, geographies, and identities”.
  • A Different Asian American Timeline: “This timeline covers nearly 600 years of history starting with the early Atlantic slave trade in the 15th Century, tracing the rise of modern nation-states, and covering events that have affected people across racial boundaries. We cannot fully understand Asian American history without asking why Asians arrived in the Americas, and what relationship their arrival had to the global conditions affecting people across racial and national boundaries at the time.”
